“What inspires my smoke session playlists is most definitely wherever I am in my life – even though it’s constantly changing, you can always expect it to be fresh, and in the moment… Being a singer-songwriter myself, there’s nothing quite like finishing a project, and throwing it into the faded mix as well. I gotta make sure it hits!” -Brian McKnight Jr.
Watch BMKJ live this month at DoubleBlind Mycology festival in California, alongside Nutritious, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Dylan Meek, Overlay and more. Today’s vibey selections include songs from Tears for Fears, Khruangbin and Wiz. Light up and get down!
True Companion – Donald Fagen
Donald Fagen is the master at creating the mood. It’s usually the song that starts my day, and my waking up and cooking. That’s why he’s number one on the list. It’s perfect for putting the spaceship on autopilot and having a drink with an interplanetary lover.
Head Over Heels / Broken – Tears for Fears
This obvious number two is for the Donnie Darko stoner in me.
Something about those na na na na na really takes the high to stellar heights… nothing like magical synths and ethereal buds. I’m sure the bad guys would agree.
Dear Alfred – Khruangbin
On third base we have one of the most amazingly written and phenomenally produced jams by one of the tightest, grooviest and best looking bass players out there, the badass of a frontman Laura Leezy having groups… keeping us in the right tempo to start this climb somewhere a little higher.
I wonder who Alfred is and why he left. Maybe a tear drops, but no sadness. I like to call it a little faded dew.
Mezmorized – Wiz Khalifa
Stealing the base for home is from the next generation Weed King, and self-proclaimed rock star himself.
If you’ve never been in a hot club listening to this jam at absurd levels, do you even really smoke bro?
Will You Sing – Kamasi Washington
And to top it all off, I leave you with some eclectic, hooded, lively vibes from one of the most incredible composers of our time.
This 10-minute tune is sure to take any smoke session to places it won’t usually go; but beware, you risk becoming a fan of futuristic instrument jazz, fueled by black excellence, high class and expensive taste.
With the opening of travel restrictions, people are quickly planning various places in the Philippines – and the Department of Tourism (DOT) wants to motivate travelers even more with their curated playlists. In case you didn’t know, the DOT has launched a series of digital pandemic experiences that seek to amplify tourists’ desire to get […]
Every Loretta Lynn fan has one of their favorite songs, but we wanted to highlight them for their simple, true, and poignant messages. “You look at the country”Not only was that song the very definition of “country,” it was the very definition of Lynn — because I am everything I am — and what she […]
The eminent Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson once compared wine to “poetry in a bottle”. Stevenson’s metaphor speaks to the intense pathos we can derive from food and drink, just as we do from poetry. In my long career as a music consumer, I’ve noticed that many songwriters link the two much more explicitly by […]
