Go out? Need a playlist? Then NYLON Nights playlist is here for you. Each month we invite a guest DJ to curate an exclusive playlist that will take you from pre-game to post-game. For June 2022, multidisciplinary artist River Moon takes over.
There are many different ways to get acquainted with a musician and an artist Moon River. You may know her as the trolling “chief emoji” moderator of the popular Instagram meme account Patiasfantasyworld, through which she gained a reputation for posting some of the account’s most obnoxious and controversial memes (“I just to publish [memes] stir the pot. I just wanna start some shit,” she says). Or, you may recognize Moon through his brief pop star career and streak of trance-y BPM-raising, rave banger releases. Or, you may have met her for the first time as a DJ at a party, something she used to do with her fantasy world friends in Los Angeles. But if you ask Moon herself, none of those labels paint the full picture of what she really does. “Someone [once] described me as the term ‘multidisciplinary artist,'” she said in a recent phone call. “I don’t know what that means, but I like it.”
Whatever the label, it’s clear that Moon is an expert at having — and hosting — a good time. The artist, who divides his time between the United States and South Africa, has lent his attentive ear to fashion showsopened for Azealia Banks and arrived at studio work with Steve Lacywhile solidifying as the girl to know if you want to have a good time. And that’s exactly the attitude she’s brought to her NYLON Nights playlist, arriving just in time for the many Pride Month nights, though she doesn’t call it her Pride playlist.
“When I go out with my friends and we get ready, these are the songs we get ready for, and these are the songs we drive to the restaurant or the club,” she says. “I just wanted people to feel.”
Hits from Cassie, Beyoncé, Britney Spears and more are scattered throughout the playlist, split between current party anthems like “SAOKO” by Rosalía and “Blick Blick” by Coi Leray and Nicki Minaj . She also nods to rising British girl group FLO and pop legend Whitney Houston, whom she calls her “bisexual icon”. It’s a high-energy, no-holds-barred series of songs for those who really go out out. We’re talking full faces, dresses, and girls who are already turned on when they arrive at the club.
If you’re ready to take it to that level, stream Moon’s playlist below and read on for the musician’s candid commentary on each of her picks.
“Suga Mama” – Beyoncé
This is by far my favorite Beyoncé song. I don’t agree with what she sings because I never pay for a man, but if I’m in a bad mood and I don’t feel like going out, put that on. I guarantee you I’ll be on my feet and ready to hit the clubs.
“Hot Spot” – Foxy Brown
Doesn’t this song just make you feel like you’re on the show girlfriends? For example, could you be Joan, Toni, Maya or Lynn? This song always reminds me to go out to the hot spot with your girls. At least one of you (me) could walk away with a great job.
“Long Way 2 Go” – Cassie
Cassie randomly followed me on Instagram the other day. I never like anyone, but I’ve been listening to his first album since it came out. I was 7 then, I am 23 now. It shaped me into the villain I am today. I love you, Cassie.
“The Answer” – Britney Spears
It’s my favorite Britney song. It just makes me feel so sexy inside. She put her pussy juice in this song. Kudos to Puffy and Ryan Leslie. This song deserved a video and the works. It’s too late?
“Papi Bones” – FKA Twigs feat. Shy girl
My best friend and I listen to this all the time in the car. This is my favorite song to come out this year. Is it too late to add Rihanna to the remix?
“Saoko” – Rosalia
The Motomami itself. Rosalía is just the epitome of a bad female dog. This song is such a great tribute to one of my favorite Daddy Yankee songs. And that jazz break in the middle? She’s crazy about it.
“Bankruptcy” – Cuban Doll
I jumped on my feelings and jumped into my bag. What is there to say? This one is for the girls who choose to leave all their sorrows behind. Bitch, it’s time to get paid.
“Blick Blick” – Coi Leray, Nicki Minaj
Easily one of Nicki’s best verses. This is proof that she is the best rapper in the world. I don’t know any other rapper that’s this good. There is no debate.
“FNF (Let’s Go)” – Hitkidd & Glorilla
It’s the song of the summer. Bookmark me.
“Good Things” – Kelis
Kelis is a mother. She is Leo like me. This groove from The Neptunes is one of my favorites. I always say their work with Clipse and Kelis is their best work. I hope Kelis knows she has a great line of sons and daughters.
“Exbisexual” – Realistic!c
It’s a song by my dear friend Laina aka mistervacation aka Realistic!c. He’s a genius. This is for all my emo girls.
“Cardboard box” – FLO
I’m so excited for these girls. I missed girl groups who can actually sing and make great songs to sing. I hope they go No. 1. It’s like a Gen Z version of Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable.”
“Honey (Classic Mix)” – Mariah Carey
This is the pussy part of the playlist. I can’t make a Pride playlist without including the queen of lgbt and the greatest living songwriter. bring back the re-recording of vocals and rearrange the whole song on remixes.
“1991” – Azealia Banks
Azealia is the best. I will always love her and her music. She is the soundtrack of my life. The fact that she walked out the door fresh in her 20s and made that song? Never play my female dog!
“Sick Bitch (River Moon Remix) – LSDXOXO, River Moon
I’m very happy that this song is finally out. I recorded this in my bedroom at 2 a.m. at the start of the pandemic and now it’s in every club in the world. Kudos to my sister LSDXOXO, one of the greatest of all time.
“Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here (Dance Mix)” – Deborah Cox
If you don’t know the last chorus by heart, we revoke your queer card.
“I am every woman” – Whitney Houston
Children sang it at graduations, weddings, funerals. Whitney is my bisexual icon. I love her and in my head she’s my aunt. Rest in peace for a legendary Lion.
