That this is not the case is at least partly down to the fact that for all their sparkling array of talent, PSG could only finish second in their group behind Manchester City. That left them facing one of the group winners in that second-round draw – and unfortunately for them, that turned out to be Real Madrid.

PSG are still in the hunt for that elusive Champions League title and many thought this could be their year – not least when a certain Lionel Messi joined their already enviable front line. And at the national level at least, things are going well; they are now 13 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table. The question is whether they have enough to overcome Madrid and put up a real challenge for the biggest club trophy of them all.

It certainly won’t be easy – but manager Mauricio Pochettino has at least been given a pre-game boost, with news that Neymar is fit to start on the bench for today’s game, having been out since November with an ankle injury.

Up front, Messi lines up alongside Kylian Mbappé and Angel Di Maria in what still looks like a formidable front three, even without Neymar. Elsewhere, Pochettino chose Gianluigi Donnarumma over Keylor Navas in goal but Sergio Ramos misses playing against his former side through injury.

For Madrid, things look even more positive. Carlo Ancelotti’s side topped their group despite a shock home loss to Sheriff Tiraspol in September and lead La Liga by four points. They also have a new star striker in 21-year-old Brazilian Vinicius Jr and will be further strengthened here by the return of Karim Benzema after a month out with injury. Gareth Bale falls to the bench in his absence.

Here’s how they line up:

PSG: Donnarumma, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Nuno Mendes, Danilo Pereira, Paredes, Verratti, Di Maria, Messi, Mbappe.

Subtitles: Simons, Navas, Icardi, Neymar, Dagba, Wijnaldum, Kurzawa, Ander Herrera, Diallo, Draxler, Kehrer, Gueye.

Real Madrid: Courtois, Carvajal, Eder Militao, Alaba, Mendy, Modric, Casemiro, Kroos, Asensio, Benzema, Vinicius Junior.

Subtitles: Nacho, Hazard, Marcelo, Lunin, Valverde, Jovic, Lucas, Bale, Ceballos, Rodrygo, Isco, Camavinga.

Whoever plays, there will be plenty of talent on the pitch, so this game could go both ways. Find out what happens by watching the PSG vs Real Madrid live stream, which we’ll show you below.
