JAZZIZ Editors’ Choice: Gilad Hekselman, PJ Morton, Charles Mingus & More (PLAYLIST)

The editors of JAZZIZ are lucky enough to be able to listen to new music ahead of its official release in stores and streaming platforms. And because we listen to new tracks all the time, we know exactly what to recommend. That’s why, every Monday, we’ll bring you a ten-song roundup, featuring music from our favorite new albums, singles, and other tunes that may have flown under your radar. And, for good measure, we’ll also add some “golden oldies”…

This week we kick things off with a stunning version of Kate Bush’s famous hit song “Wuthering Heights” from Cécile McLorin’s latest album Salvant, ghost song. Next, Steven Feifke summons the best of the line of piano trios in his spirited cover of Bud Powell’s classic, “Celia.” Next, a track from Finnish duo Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola’s latest ethereal ambient-jazz collaboration, Open, which came out last week. Fantastic Negrito will release his powerful and visionary new album, White Jesus Black Problem, June 3. “Oh Betty”, the disc’s last single, gives you a taste of what awaits you. We’re also looking forward to guitarist Gilad Hekselman’s long-awaited new album, distant star. You can listen to the last single from this disc, “Long Way From Home”, a collaboration with Eric Harland, in our playlist.

PJ Morton Performs “New Orleans Girl,” Revealed Fifth Single From Upcoming Soundtrack Release Take Me to the River: New Orleans, a documentary celebrating the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. “Philip” is a track from Jameszoo’s latest album, one of ten albums we’ve featured in our monthly Featured Releases of the Month feature. This particular piece was titled after his personal friend Philip Akkerman, the artist who designed Blind‘s accompanying tarot card pack. Saxophonist Kenny Shanker draws the listener into a deeply satisfying “Vortex” on the title track of his latest LP. Rounding out this triple saxophonist project, the title track from Melissa Aldana’s recently released debut Blue Note, 12 stars.

Closing out this week’s playlist, our “golden oldie” bonus, as we continue to remember the legendary Charles Mingus in the year of his 100th birthday by highlighting the Mingus Ah Um version of “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” his heartfelt tribute to saxophonist Lester Young.
