“Rise Like A Phoenix is such a powerful song, Conchita is fantastic and she sang it brilliantly. I love all that build-up of the chorus, the expectation of where it’s going to go, it’s wonderful.

“Soldi stands out because Mahmood was so laid back and cool. When a song hits you as hard as Soldi does, in a language you don’t understand, and you still sing along to it, that gives a singer extra points in my book. And the signature hand clap [stands out].
“The fact that I was there that year also makes it more special, I think. When we went out afterwards, in every club we were at, we just wanted to hear Soldi.

“This song changed a lot of people’s perspective on Eurovision and how you can use the platform to do different kinds of performances. It’s just a blast from a pop song.
“And also the stage performance was really powerful. To do well at Eurovision, having a good song is one thing, but you really have to capture a moment. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do all the confetti and pyro… you just need to capture the moment.

“I was in a club in Tel Aviv after Eurovision in 2019, and everyone was dancing. At one point, they played Eleni Foureira’s Fuego, and it was huge! People went crazy, and I remember dancing like crazy to it.

“Sébastien Tellier has definitely had an influence on me. He is, I think, the artist that I discovered thanks to Eurovision and that I listened to the most afterwards. I really enjoy his music in general, and I first heard about him through Eurovision.

“I love that song. It was a little jazzy, and I love jazz. In Italy it’s not that popular, so when Rapahel Gualazzi represented with a pop-jazzy song, for me it’s felt like some kind of innovator.

“I remember Sandie Shaw winning in 1967. I was a young girl then and because I was a runner I wanted to win an Olympic gold medal, that was my ultimate goal. But when I saw Sandie Shaw win Eurovision, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s what I want to do, I want to win the Eurovision Song Contest for my country.
“And this young lad from Bethnal Green, east London, living in a social flat, with a dream like that, to think it actually happened is really fantastic, to be honest.”
